Dig That Crazy Beat

Listen now listen very closely there's a life that's beating rhythmically

close your eyes listen to the music days and nights are metered poetry

oh I know the method of survival's digging in and tearing you apart.

now you're hearing something in the distance listen up cause it's your heart

Dig that, dig that, dig that crazy beat

Dig that, dig that, dig that crazy beat

Oh, I know you get a little lonely isolate yourself and it's no good

ah you think the life you could be living you'd be living if you only could

you don't know the power you're possessing there's an answer in your own two feet

right out there a hundred feet are walking, making human music in the street

Dig that, dig that, dig that crazy beat

Dig that, dig that, dig that crazy beat

Close your eyes, listen to the music, oh there’s magic possibilities

have you felt the touch of the magician every breath is metered poetry

take a hand don't live as a stranger we all understand a beating heart

close your eyes give in to the rhythm this is life and we are on its parts

Dig that, dig that, dig that crazy beat

Dig that, dig that, dig that crazy beat

Dig that, dig that, dig that crazy beat

Dig that, dig that, dig that crazy beat

Real Love

Tall skinny Sally keeps a conquest tally of the men who have lingered

Sally's like an alley where you don't dilly dally she is darkness with fingers

Sadie is a lady who don't believe in voodoo

Warm cool Sam he drives a cool TransAm and he's a whiz with a gearshift

Sam saw Sally and he parked in her alley but he left with his gears stripped

Sadie is a lady who don't play nothing cool

She says I'm the one who's there for him

I'm the one who cares for him

I'm the one he's thinking of

I'm the one with real love

I'm the one with real love

I'm the one with real love

Some pick Sally but the lily of the valley's full of thorns

watch your fingers

Sally loves to dally you're a king in her alley but the queen has a stinger

Sadie is a lady who don't steal family jewels

She says, I'm the one who's there for him

I'm the one who cares for him

I'm the one he's thinking of

I'm the one with real love

I'm the one with real love

I'm the one with real love

Tall skinny Sally keeps a conquest tally of the men who have lingered

Sally's like an alley where you don't dilly dally she is darkness with fingers

Sadie is a lady who don't believe in voodoo

She says I'm the one who's there for him

I'm the one who cares for him

I'm the one he's thinking of

I'm the one with real love

I’m the one with real love

Living in a State of Grace

Where are you I can feel you nearing me

crazy world I get lost in crowds

though I speak it feels like no one's hearing me

then there's your face

In the dark, a nameless fear comes over me

crazy world I'm crying in my sleep

then all is still

I wake and you are holding me

love takes its place

It seems like living in love is living in a state of grace

living in love is living in a state of grace

Through the day your heart is keeping time with me

crazy world I can hardly speak

love was like a ghost that always haunted me

until your face

It seems like living in love is living in a state of grace

living in love is living in a state of grace

Day and night may sun and moon watch over us

crazy world it's hard to keep your head

everything untrue that has been holding us

let love erase

It seems like living in love is living in a state of grace

Living in love is living in a state of grace

Living in love is living in a state of grace

Living in love is living in a state of grace

Wandering the Streets of Modern America

 There it was near nightfall

I asked a passerby for the time

and she said ‘late twentieth century’

sirens sang like catcalls

the moon was paled by neon light

oh I guess she was right

Cars were whizzing past me

with booming jungle beat radios

headlights cut the dusk like switchblades

lover's eyes like fireflies in feather fingered evening chill

Oh I can feel it still

Wandering the streets of modern America

Wandering the streets of modern America

A dark-haired woman dancing

multi-colored skirt in the wind

music came through an open window

oh I saw your eyes then

someone's camera caught her spin

love was like a second skin

Traffic lights were changing

Stop and go

a pulse and a flow

of thousands of life stories

Hungry eyes like fireflies

Like spirits you could pass right through

Oh but I remember you

Wandering the streets of modern America

Wandering the streets of modern America

The modern world is changing

Every day grows stranger to me

In this world that we were born to

Half of what it should be

Like a bird with broken wing

Oh, but you made it sing

Wandering the streets of modern America

Wandering the streets of modern America

Like a bird with broken wing

Oh but you made it sing

Sweet Imagination

 Roll down the blinds

Another day has passed

It's quiet time

The years they lay behind

Like broken glass

A toast to make

Toss the glass against the wall it breaks

Slow the camera watch the shards of glass

Slowly arc through the air

There goes my sweet imagination

There it goes and it goes wild

There goes my sweet imagination

I grow and it stays a child

oh second hand

Carve the hours while we're making plans

I will listen to your ticking heart

Hearts today

You can't hear a single sound they make

Electric clocks are better anyway

Life makes silence way

There goes my sweet imagination

There it goes and it goes wild

There goes my sweet imagination

I grow and it stays a child

[ bridge ]

It's changing time

All the guards exchanging

valentines

With cut-out hearts and strung like paper dolls

This too will pass

Move with care across the shards of glass

Bless our travels to these separate ends

Love will seed again

There goes my sweet imagination

There it goes and it goes wild

There goes my sweet imagination

I grow and it stays a child

I grow and it stays a child

I grow and it stays a child

Postcard to the Stars

 Greetings to the stars

sometimes this world is like a house I hide in

you are like a window lined with lace

lying with my back turned to the earth here and now we come face to face

this is quite a planet

can't take nothing here for granted

I'm sending this song into space

hello from the human race

The earth is whispering a warning

we have not been listening

I lay against her I can hear her sigh

we act very brave

but if you want the truth you'll see it in our eyes

we play tug-of-war

with god and pieces of the land

and we have guns that can lay to waste

the human race

We have sent you greeting cards

our rocket ships are question marks

they thunder and they whistle through the air

like a child in the dark forever whispering

Is anybody there?

we have color tv's and there's music and there's dancing

but I think we wear a lonely face

the human race

Greetings to the stars

you've traveled light years for your light to fall on human eyes

sometimes I feel the same

do you still exist or have you vanished by the time that you've been seen

greetings to the heavens

may you shine on us forever

and I pray you shed a saving grace

on the human race

Missiles and Guns

It’s planting time I dig in the earth

planting all my dreams where is the sun

every life's a seed

every one the wind

I'm tired of planting my dreams in the shadow of

missiles and guns

missiles and guns

A history book is a story of guns

years of blowing souls to kingdom come

raise a hundred flags

bury us til we

grow tired of pledging our hearts to the shadow of

missiles and guns

missiles and guns

It seems to me we are all of one world

many different rivers but one sun

every thought's a seed

every word the wind

and we have planted our dreams in the shadows of

missiles and guns

missiles and guns

Do It

So it begins, it seems so simple

you look into his eyes like you're looking through a window

you don't want to see but you're lighting the candle

you don't want to go inside, but you're trying the handle

So you do it do it  do it do it you just do it

No you don't want to do it do it, do it do it, but you do it

No you don't want to do it do it do it do it but you do it

You do it you do it you do it

And so it seems when it seems so innocent

room full of steam he just vaporized your hesitance

slow like a dream watch a minute turn to hours

love is pretty mean when it's got you in its power

So you do it do it  do it do it you just do it

No you don't want to do it do it, do it do it, but you do it

No you don't want to do it do it do it do it but you do it

You do it you do it you do it

How your head spins when you come to your senses

you're boarding the windows he's picketing your fences

you don't want to leave but you're turning the handle

you don't want to go outside but you're fleeing from vandals

So you do it do it  do it do it you just do it

No you don't want to do it do it, do it do it, but you do it

No you don't want to do it do it do it do it but you do it

You do it you do it you do it

A Woman's Voice

Can you hear it can you feel it in the air

It's like fingers running through your hair

Coming through the trees and running through the earth,

If you're still you’ll hear

Sweet like you've never known

strong as the roots of home

oh how the roots have grown

it's time you're hearing a woman's voice

Hear a woman's voice like puzzle piece to man's

and her hand  like puzzle piece in hand

it's a quiet night

just listen and you'll hear

we're a world in fear

time is a beating drum,

peace like a setting sun

fear is a loaded gun

it’'s time you're hearing a woman's voice

Still this world of sound

just for one minute stop and take a look around

I think you need us now

Can you hear it, can you feel it in the air

it just may be answer to a prayer

are you running here and looking everywhere

for what was always there

no you are not alone

sweet the sound of your own.

oh let it call you home

It's time you're hearing a woman's voice

It's time you're hearing a woman's voice

It's time you're hearing a woman's voice

The Proving Ground

The sun went down again today

I feel pretty good cause I took it in stride

I know it's coming back again

I'd like to catch my breath but my hands are tied

You think it's easy being human

when the world knows what it's doing

it goes round and round and round and round and round

well I just came in for a landing

and I'm trying to get a hand in

while I'm standing here on the proving ground

I lived inside a wishing well

it swallowed me did you hear me call

the sun went down day after day

she gave her light to the moon such a graceless fall

it was oh so cloak and dagger

I was looking pretty haggard

turning round and round and round and round and round

but I climbed out for a reason

this has got to be my season

cause I'm standing here on the proving ground

The sun went down again today

you feel pretty good you can close your eyes

she went down in a fire blaze

signed her name in the haze like she owned the sky

and the world's not young and tender

but see how it surrenders

it goes round and round and round and round and round

and the light becomes a crescent

and the moon gives you his blessing

cause you're standing here on the proving ground

standing here on the proving ground

standing here on the proving ground

Sandcastles

My oh my you don't listen to a word I say

do you goodbye goodbye I've been saying it every day

open your eyes this is your life

I try and try not to listen to what people say

oh but their eyes their eyes there's a way to say it anyway

lift your head cause I think it's high tide

And you're building your castles on sand

(it’'s gonna tumble down)

building your castle on sand

(it’'s gonna wash away)

building your castle on sand

it’'s gonna tumble down

it's gonna wash away

Dream your dreams let them carry you like tidal streams

but we build our world on land

but you can't be building yours on sand

swallow your pride can't you see I'm on your side

And you're building your castles on sand

(it’'s gonna tumble down)

building your castle on sand

(it’'s gonna wash away)

building your castle on sand

it’'s gonna tumble down

it's gonna wash away

I don't want to build no sand castles

I don't want to build no sand castles

I don't want to build no sand castles

they're gonna tumble down

they're gonna wash away

Mapped in sand that's the way we drew our battle plans

but we overarmed the guards they don't listen now to our commands

we'd better take matters into our own hands

And you're building your castles on sand

(it’'s gonna tumble down)

building your castle on sand

(it’'s gonna wash away)

building your castle on sand

it’'s gonna tumble down

it's gonna wash away

Time and Change

Feeling pretty comfortable that's the human way

wheel along the road is life lights illuminate

watch out

here it comes

watch out

better gather all your faculties

it's your friend and enemy

 catch your breath

you're about to meet your match

Time and change

time and change

time and change

and change

time and change

Feeling pretty shaken up

making human sounds

steel your nerves and gather breath

for the second round

watch out here it comes

watch out better rally round the friends you'll need

keep your faith and energy

don't catch your death

you can rise to meet your match

Time and change

time and change

time and change

and change

time and change

A human being is a mystery

may all approach each other carefully

allow some leeway sometimes life is strange

become familiar with your time

and change

and change

Feeling pretty comfortable that's the human way

wheel along and soon enough change will come your way

watch out here it comes

watch out

better pull the visor to the side

turn your wheel into the slide

don't run shy

look'em right between the eyes

Time and change

time and change

time and change

and change

time and change

Nothing Lasts Forever

You look so peaceful over there

the evening light is kind

if I should spend a lifetime here

it would not be a day of time

Nothing lasts forever

nothing lasts forever

If I should cover all the clocks

and smooth your face of lines

if I should stop the hands their turn

it won't reclaim a breath of time

Nothing lasts forever

nothing lasts forever

Please don't leave me alone

this night

it's night

and nothing lasts forever

Sometimes home is in a face

in human angel eyes

but with such beauty comes an ache

that grows more bittersweet with time

Nothing lasts forever

Nothing lasts forever

Nothing lasts forever

Nothing lasts forever

The Thunderhead

So you want to stay out all night

and you want to burn a younger woman's light

and you slam that door on an honest fight

well that's all right

A woman learns to wear her age with grace

accept the sculpture time carves of her face

then her man's the kind who's afraid of time

but that's all right

There's the river and the weed

and the wind and the seed

and we're all as free as we want to be

So you want to leave me rocking on the porch

and burn me with a younger woman's torch

well I've made the best of an empty nest

but that's all right

There's the river and the weed

and the wind and the seed

and we're all as free as we want to be

This thunderhead was brooding all along

you left the kitchen window up too long

now you lie alone

and the rain comes home

but that's all right

Just a pile of bones

that a cold wind owns

but that's sll right

To think I dreamed one time

you had dreams like mine

but that's alright
